Homer wrote her into the Odyssey as an obstacle. Later readers understood her as the only honest person in the poem. Circe was a goddess who lived alone on the island of Aeaea, surrounded by lions and wolves she had made from men — not out of cruelty, but out of knowledge. She understood transformation the way most people understand breathing. It was simply what she did with the truth.

When Odysseus arrived with his crew, she saw them for exactly what they were. She transformed the men into swine — and they became, at last, what they had always been inside. Odysseus, with an herb and a sword and considerably more self-awareness than his companions, stayed human. She fell in love with him anyway. Or something adjacent to love — the kind that a goddess offers when she chooses, for once, not to transform something she wants to keep.

She is one of the oldest witches in Western literature. She predates the word. She is not a villain. She is the woman who knew the nature of every living thing and decided to stay on her island regardless, unbothered and entirely in command.
